Napa Valley photographer Faith Echtermeyer
has been photographing table tops, people,
landscapes, and special events in the Bay Area
and around the world since 1979. Faith's years
of training began on lunch breaks in New York
where, as an undergraduate on hiatus from Mills
College, she spent every lunch hour at MOMA.
It was here that she learned about light, form,
and meaning. She honed her skills on travels in
Europe, through the photography she eagerly
experienced at San Francisco's renowned Focus
Gallery, and in classes at City College and the
San Francisco Art Institute.
A master of technique, technique never gets in
her way. "I've got a bag full of equipment," says
Faith, "but I work by feeling." She guides people
to where the light is most generous, waits for that
quick blush or tilt of the head, that unguarded
gesture that catches a character exactly, then makes
the picture. It's the warmth and light in Faith
Echtermeyer's photographs that sets them apart.
Gourmet and Metropolitan Home magazines, among others, regularly request Faith's insider portraits of the Wine Country. When she photographs food and wine, she has the culinary knowledge to act as her own stylist. But whether Faith has turned her eye to the midnight blue of grapes on the vine, a plate of fruit dusted with sugar, a pasta maker in Umbria, or a street vendor in Bangkok, the light, the inner glow of the photographs is unmistakable.
